Register, 1871-1873, and accounts, 1876-1877, of Toulmin's law practice in Mobile, Mobile Co., Ala. The register covers cases entered in behalf of clients in the Ala. Chancery Court (including at least one case appealed to the Ala. Supreme Court), the Mobile City Court, and the Ala. Circuit Court. The registers for the chancery court and the city court contain a number, the name of the plaintiff and defendant, and how the case was disposed. The register for the circuit court contains the same information, except that the disposition of the case is not included, unless the case was dismissed. The accounts, 1876-1899, five pages, are entered basically chronologically, and contain information on the legal service rendered, and the amount still due, if any. Significant services were rendered to LeGrand and Co., on a lawsuit; to Commercial Fire Insurance Co., on advice and superintendence in the preparation of the recording charter of the company, and several others.

Toulmin was born on 1838 Mar. 4 to Theophilus Lindsey and Amante Juzan Toulmin, in Mobile Co., Ala. He received his education at the University of Ala. and at the University of Va., and was admitted to the Ala. bar in 1860, beginning his practice in Mobile, Mobile Co., Ala. He entered the Confederate Army as a private in the Third Ala. Infantry Regiment in 1861 Apr., rising to the rank of colonel in 1864, and remaining at that rank until the end of the war.
